  • The Call of the Wild and White Fang

    Jack London

eBook (Books on Demand, Oct. 13, 2018)
This special edition includes two Jack London's novels in their original 1903 and 1906 unabridged version : I - THE CALL OF THE WILDThe Call of the Wild is a tale about unbreakable spirit and the struggle for existence. The central character is a domesticated sturdy cross breed canine named Buck, born to luxury and raised in a sheltered Californian home. Stolen from his home and sold into service as sled dog in Alaska, he reverts to a wild state. Buck is forced to fight in order to dominate other dogs in a harsh climate. Passed from master to master, Buck embarks on an extraordinary journey.II - WHITE FANGWhite Fang takes place in the desolate, frozen wilds of northwest Canada. White Fang, a part dog, part wolf cub finds himself the sole survivor of a litter of five. In his lonely world, he soon learned to follow the harsh law of the North - kill or be killed - and become a ferocious and magnificent creature. But nothing in his young life prepared him for the cruelty of the bully Beauty Smith, who buys White Fang from his Indian master and turns him into a vicious killer - a pit dog forced to fight for money. Much of the novel is written from the viewpoint White Fang, through whose experiences the author makes a parallel between the wilderness life among animals and the violent world of humans.

  • The Call of the Wild, White Fang & To Build a Fire

    Jack London, E.L. Doctorow

eBook (Modern Library, Nov. 1, 2000)
The Call of the Wild—Selected by the Modern Library as one of the 100 best novels of all time'To this day Jack London is the most widely read American writer in the world,' E. L. Doctorow wrote in The New York Times Book Review. Generally considered to be London's greatest achievement, The Call of the Wild brought him international acclaim when it was published in 1903. His story of the dog Buck, who learns to survive in the bleak Yukon wilderness, is viewed by many as his symbolic autobiography. 'No other popular writer of his time did any better writing than you will find in The Call of the Wild,' said H. L. Mencken. 'Here, indeed, are all the elements of sound fiction.'White Fang (1906), which London conceived as a 'complete antithesis and companion piece to The Call of the Wild,' is the tale of an abused wolf-dog tamed by exposure to civilization. Also included in this volume is 'To Build a Fire,' a marvelously desolate short story set in the Klondike, but containing all the elements of a classic Greek tragedy.'The quintessential Jack London is in the on-rushing compulsive-ness of his northern stories,' noted James Dickey. 'Few men have more convincingly examined the connection between the creative powers of the individual writer and the unconscious drive to breed and to survive, found in the natural world. . . . London is in and committed to his creations to a degree very nearly unparalleled in the composition of fiction.'

"The Call of the Wild" is the story of Buck, a large dog who is betrayed, sold and cruelly forced to pull a sledge through the frozen Yukon. Buck must adapt to the brutality of his new life, until he is saved and domesticated again - although the call of the wild always persists. In "White Fang", a wild young cub, part dog and part wolf, grows up solitary and savage and becomes the most deadly fighter of them all, until at last he has the chance to respond to kindness and learn the ways of civilization.
  • The Call of the Wild and White Fang

    Jack London, Scott McKowen

    eBook (Sterling, July 5, 2011)
The illustrations for this series were created by Scott McKowen, who, with his wife Christina Poddubiuk, operates Punch & Judy Inc., a company specializing in design and illustration for theater and performing arts. Their projects often involve research into the visual aspects of historical settings and characters. Christina is a theater set and costume designer and contributed advice on the period clothing for the illustrations.Scott created these drawings in scratchboard an engraving medium which evokes the look of popular art from the period of these stories. Scratchboard is an illustration board with a specifically prepared surface of hard white chalk. A thin layer of black ink is rolled over the surface, and lines are drawn by hand with a sharp knife by scraping through the ink layer to expose the white surface underneath. The finished drawings are then scanned and the color is added digitally. Two of Jack London’s best-loved masterpieces, in their entirety. Call of the Wild tells a compelling tale of adventure during the Yukon Gold Rush, and fully captures the unquenchable spirit of Buck, a kidnapped dog trying to survive in the harshest of environments. Also set in Alaska, the powerful White Fang follows the often savage life of the magnificent title character, a mix of wolf and dog.
